Flower Shaped Easter Egg Holder

I am excited to share the first Emma's Lunch post here at Larnaca Parents Network.  With Easter around the corner I thought it would be perfect to start with a simple and fun Easter craft.

Emma's Lunch Easter Egg Holder

This is a simple craft which can be adapted for any age.  Leave it to gluing for two year olds, allow some cutting for the five year olds. Show the concept to older children and let them figure out how to make it on their own.

Emma's Lunch Easter Egg Holder Materials

Materials needed:
One third of an empty toilet paper roll
Yellow paper
Green shredded paper
Glue
Scissors

Cut the yellow paper, making it long enough to go all the way around the toilet paper roll and high enough to be about twice its height. Cut one side of the paper into petals.  Glue it around the toilet paper roll and fold the petals back to form a flower.

Emma's Lunch Easter Egg Holder

Place some of the green shredded paper into the flower shaped egg holder and you're done! All you need is a beautifully decorated Easter Egg.
Happy Easter!

Kataklysmos

When :  1st - 6th  June  2012
Where : Larnaka Seafront

Kataklysmos Fair 2012 Programme

In Cyprus, the celebrations also hark back to the Old Testament tale of Noah’s Ark, the Greek myth of Deukalion and ancient ceremonies in honour of Aphrodite and Adonis. Larnaka is particularly proud of the festivities it puts on for several days to celebrate Kataklysmos.

The sea front promenade takes on the appearance of an open-air fair with scores of stalls selling toys and traditional food. Traditional culture takes pride of place with a competition for chatista or rhyming songs in the Cypriot dialect. Other performers include popular Greek and Cypriot singers and dance troupes. In line with the spirit of the celebrations, events include competitions in the water.

Dhekelia Garrison

The Cessac beach is an ideal location for a day out, offering a beautiful view of the bay while providing plenty of spots to choose from. Nearby is a playground for your energetic children to run around and wear themselves out while you relax on the sandy shores. Located within 30 seconds walking distance is a cafe, offering cooked meals and snacks as well as a shop containing magazines, sweets, toys and souveneirs. The coup de gras however is the Fish and Chips restaurant, offering what is often called "The best fish and chips in Cyprus" so be sure not to miss out on it.

Larnaca Marina

Larnaca Marina is right in the heart of the town. This is the place to be in Larnaca, ideally located in front of Phinikoudes, a palm tree lined promenade with many restaurants, cafes, bars to choose from with a great sea view and access to all forms of rentals and boats. Additionally, the marina is surrounded by a mass amount of large boulders perfect for climbing acroos and getting far enough out to sea to go fishing without a boat.

Guided Tours of the City

One of the best ways to take in the magic of Larnaka is to experience it on foot, with an informative and interesting guided tour.

With no need to book, simply come along to the starting point at the set time and experience a guided walking tour of Larnaka. The two walks, “Larnaka – Past and Present” and “Scala – Its Craftsmen” offer a fascinating insight into the traditions, culture and architecture of the great city. The first starts from the Cyprus Tourist Organisation Information Office and the second starts from the Larnaka Fort – Larnaka Medieval Museum. The walks last for approximately two hours, inclusive of a twenty-minute break to allow for a rest and to take in a welcome drink in a traditional kafenion (coffee shop), especially welcome in the hot summer months.

All walking tours are led by a qualified Cyprus Tourism Organisation guide. Participants are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes and light cloths, and a hat is recommended during the summer months.

Private groups or travel agents who are interested in the walks or would like guidance in a specific foreign language other than English can apply to the Cyprus Tourism Organisation: 24654322

Herbs - Nature's Medicine Chest

When: Wednesday 6th June 2012
Time: 8.00pm - 9.30pm
Where: Community Council Voroklini 2,Kampou STR.,7040 Voroklini

In Cyprus, only a few generations ago, when people were eating what the land yielded in each season, making use of wild herbs as well, heart disease and cancer were virtually unknown. The eating habits of the people, from ancient times, were full of nutrients and prevented illness. They used to eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, pulses, nuts and seeds. All these foods are classified as herbs. The rocket and coriander we eat in our salads, the fruits and nuts, you?ll find them in every herb book with a long list of benefits for each one.
Herbs are food as well as medicine! Herbs are also taken as tinctures, capsules, oils, creams and salves.A simple tea can, taken a few times a day for as little as a few days, help us overcome colds, infections and other health imbalances. They are the key to restoring good health, are generally safer and certainly cheaper than synthetic medicine and have few or no side effects.
Why not start using herbs for health now?

Miranda Tringis

I have been cultivating organic herbs for 7 years now. I studied Herbal Medicine at the Institute of Natural Healing (UK). I now practice as an Herbalist in Oroklini, helping people to improve their health and nutrition with herbs. I provide primary and high schools with special herb workshops and teach basic knowledge of herbs and their uses in schools, give talks at associations and clubs, and do a bi-weekly herb segment on a local CYBC tv morning show.
I co-founded and am chair of the Herb Society Cyprus.
My organic herb plantation in Avgorou is being developed into an exhibition garden, herb information centre and tea room.

This talk will be in English & is free of charge

Aradippou Forest

Ideal for hikes and picnics, the Aradippou forest contains a plethora of wildlife and plant life. Majestic trees surrounding you the whole time, just don't try climbing them, they're not as sturdy as they look! However this should not deter you from taking a fun day out, finding a nice spot, and having a pleasant family picnic, maybe even with friends. The forest is certainly big enough!

Oroklini Mountain

Arguably Oroklini's biggest landmark, the Oroklini mountain towers over the town and is visible from miles away. A popular choice for hikers, do not underestimate it's size, it really is huge. At the top is an old monastery, several other abandoned churches, and you can find multiple small farmhouses on it's slopes. The view from the top is truly breathtaking however, offering a view of Oroklini, Dhekelia, a huge portion of the sea, and even Larnaca.
