Here's to a fresh start!

There can't be many people who aren't seduced and swept away at the promise of a new year and a 'new start'.

In reality, we know full well that there is no new start because the date changes, but it is a powerful thought that at the chime of the clock, you have another chance to turn it all around.

For many years, I would make the same, tired resolution to lose weight and be more successful, but I gave that up a while back when I decided to make smaller resolutions that would really make a difference to my happiness and those around me.

Last year, my mum complained that I would never hug her. I guess this was because as a mother of two young children, my hug quota was used up on them, coupled with the fact that I am always too darn worn out (from the kids) to remember to do these things. So, last year, my resolution was to give my mum a hug every time I see her (which is most days). At first I would forget, but she would soon remind me, and now, it comes naturally and automatically to give her a squeeze when we say goodbye.

This year, I resolve to play more with my children. I work from home so I am with them once they finish nursery at midday, but I am not always 'with' them in my head as I juggle the writing, being a mother and a housewife. Although I interact with them constantly and we are always out doing something fun, I need to also stop doing the things I think are so important at home (which in reality are not in the greater scheme of things), and give them unadulterated playing time more often - before they grow and decide they are too cool for me! I say this tentatively because it isn't realistic to be playing with them 24/7 and I am sure it won't always work out with the daily work and chores stacking up, but I really, really intend to do it.

When it comes to Larnaca, we all hope beyond hope that 2014 will be better. The words that I think sum up 2013 are 'desperation' and 'survival' and I would like to see these turn into 'regeneration' and 'positivity' in 2014. I want the sad, empty shops to be full of life again; I want to see smiles on faces and upbeat attitudes. When you ask someone 'how are you?', I want to hear that actually, they aren't too bad!

I think that society has got used to the idea that to be happy you have to have abundance – an abundance of the latest electronic gadgets, an abundance of food that you end up throwing away, an abundance of holidays and night outs. We need to adjust our expectations of what we actually need in abundance to health, love, fresh air and quality time...

…which is why I resolve to play with my children more!

Pumpkin and Turkey Curry

First I would like to say that I hope you had a lovely Christmas and enjoyed all that lovely food put before you!! After all, it is a time of feasting and merriment!! I've been searching for recipes these days and of course the majority of them are about Christmas dinner leftovers. In the past the most we did with our leftover turkey is sandwiches and pickle, now, I have found so many delicious ideas that I feel like cooking a small turkey just to try some of these beautiful dishes!! I finally choose this one, first because it does sound delicious, but like they say, first we eat with our eyes, and this one just jumped at me just by looking at those beautiful rich colours!! I hope you enjoy this!!

Ingredients

450g Pumpkin, peeled, and cut into 2cm cubes
2 tbsp sunflower oil
1 onion, thinly sliced
3 garlic cloves, crushed
Large chillies, deseeded and finely chopped and 1 deseeded and finely sliced, to garnish
11/2 tbls Thai fish sauce
1 tbls light soy sauce
1 tsp sugar
100g green beans, trimmed
350g cooked turkey, cut into long strips
Juice of one lime, plus lime wedges to serve
2 tbls Coriander, chopped

Method

Heat the oven to 200c, 180 fan, gas 6. Place the pumpkin in a roasting tin, add half the oil, coat well and roast for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a large casserole an soften the onion for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and chilli and cook for another minute. Now add the curry paste, increase the heat and fry for a further minute. Pour in coconut milk, stirring well, then add the stock, fish sauce, soy sauce, and sugar. Simmer for 10 minutes. 

Add the green beans, turkey and roasted pumpkin, cover and simmer for 10 minutes until the turkey is piping hot and the beans are tender. Add the lime juice and three-quarters of the coriander and stir well.
To serve, scatter with chilli and coriander. Serve with rice and lime wedges on the side.

A Christmas Message

An eventful year has almost come to an end, which was highlighted by a crisis that started to show its effects with the banking system collapse, meaning devastating effects for the Cypriot society and its households.

Personal income, tax revenue, profits and prices dropped, while jobless rates rocketed with thousands Cypriots having no money even for the necessary essentials.

Cyprus still continues to survive with capital controls, although individuals and businesses are able to conduct  their daily activities all be it with restrictions. The Cyprus Popular Bank split into “good” and “bad” entities and effectively shut down. Moreover, still the danger concerning the Bank of Cypriot has not yet completely gone.

The outlook of economic performance for the next few years is undoubtedly wholly negative with hundreds of Cypriots emigrating to other countries every month in search of a better life and to escape the corruption and theft (of bank accounts) that took place on a mass scale without a compassionate EU to help the man in the street of Cyprus.

Unfortunately, Cyprus may never be quite the same again!

As we approach Christmas 2013 and look back in sadness we watch, helplessly as our tradition of Christmas being eroded further and further. Consumerism, brand conscious Cypriots and showing off attitudes were extremely widespread in recent years with crazy consumers at the stores buying, consuming and ultimately dying in spirit at least.

In 2013 however much of this has changed at least for the majority of Cypriots. This Christmas Holy season, maybe we should all reflect just what Christmas truly means and remember that around the world and our country there are many others much worse off than we are.

As we witness change, the radical austerity imposed to all Cypriots may yet offer positive thing. People started to change and proof of that is the Larnaca’s Parents Network being the source of help where parents despite the current trend gave from the heart to their “Give a Gift” programme for needy children. 

Food banks and charity started for the people in need and a certain community spirit took root. Perhaps now we can judge a person by the content of their character and not by the brand they wear or the car they drive!

Let’s hope that the crisis will turn into an opportunity for us all to develop the real values of altruism and make simplicity, giving and relationships foremost in our lives.

Bedtimes and bazaars

The run-up to Christmas is great if you have kids as there is no shortage of events to take them to in Larnaca, but the thing that really grinds my gears, is their late start.

We – like most parents I know in the English speaking community – feed our kids early (6pm) and get them to bed at a reasonable time for developing brains and bodies (7.30/45pm), but half these events start too late for us to attend them. It seems to be the cultural norm, and accepted for Cypriot children not go to bed until 9pm, and some later still, hence the late start times.

When I tell my family in the village that we can't come for dinner because they are inviting us at 9pm, they are incredulous and tell me off for sending my 'poor' children to bed 'with the chickens'. Then they try to tell me that the early morning wake-ups (my kids typically wake up at 6am) are because they go to bed too early. I completely refute this as we have had later nights when there is an occasion we cannot miss, and they have still been up at the crack of dawn. My kids can't handle later bedtimes, and to be honest, neither can I – parents have got to have some down time at the end of the day!

Whilst my kids (and often I) are tucked up in bed, I can hear the children of the neighbourhood running riot well past 9pm on weekdays and past midnight on weekends and the summer. Surely these children are falling asleep at their school desks, or at least, not concentrating the way they should?

Moving away from the start times and on to the events, we have been particularly bombarded with charity Christmas events this year, and they all follow the same format of 'bazaar' with handmade gifts and decorations and a bit of musical entertainment. Due to our dire situation they have been organised in their droves, and whilst I am all for the spirit of giving, we can't give to all these events and spread ourselves so thinly, especially when the majority of them are almost identical in what they offer.

In my humble opinion, the town should have organised one mega, massive, properly organised event where all the charities could combine forces and split the proceeds. I am talking about a huge extravaganza with Santa in his grotto, good quality stalls, bouncy castle, clowns, face painters, Christmas music, fairground rides, proper Christmas food and drink, big name celebrity performances, children's characters, arts and crafts, Christmas film screenings, story time and, and, and. One big, magical affair that would attract crowds from all over the island, thus making more money for charitable causes than these multiple little bazaars must be making.

I would suggest it for next year, but I am really hoping that by then everyone will be in a better position and won't be in such desperate need….

Larnaca’s Association of Multiple Sclerosis in collaboration with the Rotaract and Interact Clubs of Larnaca Kition are organizing a Charity Christmas Bazaar on the Kimonos square in front of the Hobbos restaurant for the financial support of the Association.

On the site there will be handmade Christmas decorations, Books, Sweets and Ornaments for sale. Also a Santa Claus Photo Booth will operate by the Rotaract club and a dance program by the Interact club will be performed.

Из самого сердца зимней России – города Костромы – к нам едет театральное мим-шоу «Пудики» под руководством самого Деда Мороза! Новогодние истории, сладкие подарки, музыка и игры – вот только часть того, что приготовили для кипрских детей долгожданные гости. 

Самые маленькие зрители, детки 2-4 лет, побывают в снежной семье Снеговичков, у которых родился маленький снежный малыш. Ему будет очень приятно увидеть на своем дне рождения так много новых друзей. А нам предстоит научить его множеству зимних игр и рассказать о том, как мы встречаем Новый год. 

Дети в возрасте 4-12 лет приглашаются на интерактивную праздничную программу «Новогодние приключения сНежных чудаков». Игры, танцы, конкурсы и, конечно же, необыкновенная новогодняя сказка.

Blowing Hot and Cold

As residents of Larnaca, we often hear from visitors how lucky we are to have such lovely, hot weather most of the year round, but unless someone lives here, they cannot appreciate the balancing act that our climate presents.

First of all, we don't really have 'seasons'. It's more like one and half seasons – one that is comprised of unending months of hot to sweltering heat, and a half season that is a cross between autumn and winter and can give us anything from slightly cold to bone chilling temperatures. And it seems we are not very adept at coping with either properly…

Yes, it's great to live on a sunshine island, and lounging around on beaches all day doing nothing in the heat is a lovely idea, but when you live a real life in it and have to do boring, 'lifey' things - such as going to work and food shopping - it becomes very uncomfortable, which visitors just can't comprehend. I, like many others spend the day going from the car to air conditioned interiors and back to the car again trying all the while not to end up an unsightly sweaty mass… but at least everyone else is sweating with me so it's not social suicide to turn up dripping from the heat!

But the thing that really throws me is the extreme, sudden change from hot to cold to hot. One minute it seems like summer is literally never going to end after starting in May and dragging on till the start of December, then it hits us with the force of a snowball. There we are moaning that we have had enough of the heat, yearning for winter clothes, reminding ourselves that maybe we should start changing our wardrobes round, then boom… icicles on our toes. Then the mad scramble ensues to grab whatever cardigan is at the front of the wardrobe and the strange feeling of moving from sandals to closed shoes, a big adjustment to make in the face of the violent and sudden drop in temperature.

It happens the other way round too. One minute we are comfortably and happily able to take a stroll in reasonable temperatures, then the next day the sun is out in full force and walking anywhere further than to the car – to take us to our next air conditioned interior (see above!) – is to risk total skin melt-off. The weather in Cyprus never eases us in gently, it just changes in the space of 24 hours.

I find that the worse thing is trying to keep children the right temperature; how many layers in the cold, fan or air-con in the heat? As our houses don't seem to be designed for either kinds of weather, this balancing act with little ones is a very difficult one and I never feel I have it quite right.

So, I am not sure if I prefer sweaty patches or icicles… but I would like a bit of adjustment time either way!

LPN Recipe of the Week - Broccoli and Blue Cheese Soup

It's cold, it's soup time!!... I always make sure I have fresh vegetable soup in my house now, being so easy to make and also it's just a warming healthy snack to have around when you're feeling a little peckish..I made this particular one last year and now it has become one of my favourites, it really is delicious and so simple to make. Here's the recipe…

Ingredients
2 tbsp Olive Oil
1 Onion, finely chopped
1 stick celery, sliced
1 leek, sliced
1 medium potato, diced
1 tbls butter
1 litre Chicken stock
1 head Broccoli, chopped
140g Blue cheese, crumbled

Method
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and then add the onions. Cook on a medium heat until soft.
Add the celery, leek, potato and butter. Stir until melted, then cover with a lid and allow to sweat for about 5 minutes. Now pour in the stock and add any chunky bits of broccoli stalk. Cook for 10-15 minutes until all the vegetables are soft. Add the rest of the broccoli and cook for a further 10 minutes. Take a few bits of broccoli and set aside.Transfer to a blender and blitz until smooth. Stir in the broccoli pieces and blue cheese.

Season with salt and pepper and serve.

Christmas: a magical yet irritating time!

So… are you feeling Christmasy yet? There is no escaping it now; Christmas is right up in our faces with no regard for personal space, and I for one have real mixed feelings about this time of year.

Firstly, I won't accept the Christmas season before December 1. I know that shops and supermarkets have to start early because their competitors start early, and I know the municipality has to start early as there are so many trees and decorations to put up around Larnaca… but I really don't like Christmas in September, October or November.  The tree does not go up in our house before December 1, and I turn off Christmas music when it comes on the radio. This is no bah humbug attitude, but one month of the same songs and garish decorations is more than enough and I don't want to be sick of Christmas by mid-December, I want to enjoy it for a reasonably set length of time!

On the one hand, I like the spirit of the festive season; the fact that it is Jesus' birthday and that it brings out the empathetic and charitable side of people. I love getting together with family and friends and buying them gifts. I cherish seeing the awe and joy the whole Christmas package brings my young children from Santa and gifts to decorations and music - I even like Christmas crackers and wearing silly hats.

But I can't stand the greed, materialism and hypocrisy. I get sad when I see the panic people feel when they know they can't afford to celebrate properly or buy their children nice presents. I hate the way shops are so blatantly cashing in, thinking only of how their tills are filling up. I don't understand atheists and agnostics fully relishing Christmas simply to have a good time. I don't like the pressures, the overindulgence, the pretence of getting on with people or being more lenient or sympathetic just because of the time of year, and I especially hate hearing the response to bad news '…and it's Christmas', as if whatever awful thing has happened is so much worse just because it takes place in December. And why do a large number of children's Christmas films feature a deceased parent – it's horrible!

Its sad that so few remember why we celebrate Christmas in the first place, and that many children think it is simply a holiday about Santa coming to bring them gifts, which is not their fault as that is what they are taught. But at least in Cyprus we have not reached the point where it is taboo to mention Mary, Joseph, Jesus and a manger.

But before you brand me Scrooge, I do think this Christmas will be more sincere. It seems to always come back to this darn crisis, but the truth is, once again the crisis is bringing out the good in people. And this time round it really will be the season of goodwill, from the municipality promising that every citizen of Larnaca will enjoy this magical time, to so many generously donating presents for poor children.

All we need now is snow!

Angela Ashby is a local Larnaca artist, children’s activity provider and a fully qualified Personal Trainer, as well as mother to Ocean, age 4. 

On the artistic side, Angela worked as an interior designer when she first moved to Cyprus in 2004, then ran ‘Juicy Bar’ in 2007, which was a Juice Bar that exhibited work from local artists. Following its closure, Angela focused on art using recycled materials under the name of ‘The Heart of Recycling Art’ whereby she produces soft furnishings, gifts and other art using all-recycled materials. ‘The Heart of Recycling Art’ also undertakes children’s birthday parties with handmade decorations, games and party-favours that incorporate a large percentage of recycled material. 

Angela also displays her artistic skills through her children’s activities such as her Storytime in the Park sessions (that run in the summer), her princess-themed crafts corner at various events, and Christmas-themed activities where she hand-makes all her props and games.

Melomacarouna (Honey Cookies)

A Cypriot Christmas wouldn't be the same without Melomacarouna. These little gems taste of honey and have a beautiful aroma of cloves and cinnamon. I tried making these when I first got married....what an utter, complete disaster!!! It was so bad, I had to throw the oven dish away too!! Sadly, my husband left me since then, he said it was another woman, but I don't believe him, it was because of my melomacarouna, he just didn't want to hurt my feelings!!!! Anyway, don't be put off by my experience of 30 years ago, I was young and inexperienced….here's my friend Koulla's really simple recipe. Enjoy!!!

Ingredients
2 ½ cups oil
1 cup sugar
1 packet Self-raising flour
1 tsp Bicarbonate of soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Juice of half a lemon
Juice and zest of 11/2 oranges
3 tbsp brandy

Syrup
1 1/2 cup of sugar
1 1/2 cup water
3/4 cup honey
A few cloves
Finely chopped nuts, almonds or walnuts

Method
Beat oil with sugar, cinnamon, orange zest, b/p. and soda. Add juices and brandy and lastly the flour and kneed well. Roll into small oval shapes and lightly roll over grater to make small indentations on top of the cookies.Put onto grease-proof paper and cook in oven 185 for about 1/2 an hour until golden brown.
To prepare the syrup put water, sugar and cloves in a pot and bring to the boil. Once boiled add the honey and simmer. Once the biscuits are completely cooled, dip them into the syrup for a few seconds (not too long because they can get too soggy) and then place on greaseproof paper.
Finally sprinkle with nut mixture.
