Kyriazis Medical Museum

The ‘Kyriazis Medical Museum’ (Iatriko Mouseio Kyriazi) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) set up specifically in order to operate a museum of the medical, healing and health history of Cyprus. Its founding members include medical doctors, pharmacists, historians and members of the public interested in the history of Cyprus. The vision of the organization is to “preserve, for the future generations, the medical and healing inheritance of the Cypriot people”.

The museum is housed in a traditional mansion in the centre of Larnaka (a town with strong medical connections throughout antiquity, middle ages and the Ottoman period). An initial donation of over 50 old books, 60 framed documents, traditional pharmaceutical furniture and over 400 items forms the nucleus of the collection. Additional donations in kind have now been negotiated.

Exhibits include forgotten sayings and poetry with a Byzantine, Frankish, Venetian or Ottoman slant, most of which were influenced by inadequet treatments and lack of medical faricilites at the time. The interesting displays include an X-ray machine, surgical instruments and a pharmacists sisplay unit fulled iwht plenty of interesting things.

Address: 35 Karaoli & Demetriou Street, Larnaka (close to St. Lazarus Church)

Operating Hours: Every Wednesday and Saturday 09:00-12:00

The Cyprus Weekly News -This Week from LPN Mum Paula Manoli Grey

Careful what you wish for

Cyprus is in a complete mess right now with blame put on the banking sector, but in my opinion, Cyprus lost itself a long time ago as a result of our greed and desire to become something we were not.

When I moved to Cyprus in 1988, there were things I hated, and I was too young to appreciate the things I should. My first Christmas here was miserable as I was used to Christmas in England; decorations and festive music everywhere, the huge variety of gifts, the atmosphere… Mum did what she could with our stockings, but there was such limited choice in the shops and it felt like the end of the world for 11-year-old me.

Television was only broadcast for half a day on CYBC, with nothing of interest to me, and I couldn’t get my Smash Hits magazine. There was no MacDonalds and little choice for fashion. What I did have was fresh air, nice weather and a new bike that I could ride without fear of abduction. I had freedom and nature, fresh food and all my relatives nearby – some of life’s most precious things, but at that age, they got the thumbs down.

Slowly, Cyprus started to ‘modernise’ and we Larnaca kids would go up to Nicosia for the day to enjoy UK shops and Big Boy burgers, wishing that Larnaca would catch up. The trendy cafes started to open, and with them the price of drinks went up astronomically. This led to a horrible rise in snobbery, the obsessive need to have expensive, showy things and looking down on anything that wasn’t over-priced or carrying a designer label. And this was from average people on low salaries who wanted to project that they were something ‘better’, as if that was more attractive than being from a warm, humble island, famed for its generous, hospitable and down-to-earth people.

Fast-forward to today and Larnaca can rival Nicosia for shops and cafes, in fact, in a role reversal, it is the Nicosia crowd flocking to our Mackenzie seafront - the island’s current hot-spot. Fast food chains are everywhere, swallowing up our traditional tavernas and the trendy cafes all blend into one with their generic white décor and (still) over-priced drinks. We have too many TV channel choices and Christmas decorations are out from October. Crime is up and you are more likely to be met with hostility and a look of pity than a warm welcome.

I do not wish to belittle the genuine suffering of the people of Larnaca, but it was inevitable that this loss of identity and false disguise would one day no longer hold.

I feel that when we come out the other side of this, we are going to regain a lot of what we lost. People will no longer be ashamed to have less than their neighbours; they will not blow an entire month’s salary on a handbag to prove something. We will not put up with extortionate prices or rude customer service, and those who dished them out in the first place will eat some serious humble pie.

And maybe, just maybe, there is a glimmer of hope that we will become that island I moved to in 1988; I sure would appreciate it now.

LPN goes Russian

Irina originally from the Ukraine, Crimea moved to Cyprus in 2000 after finishing High School in Cyprus, she went on to  Study Law in  the University of Nicosia, she graduated in 2006 and shortly after married a wonderful local in 2007.  Irina worked in one of the biggest and most respected Law firms in Cyprus 2006 – 2010.

Following the birth of her first child Irina decided to take a break from  her career in law and dedicated herself  as a full time mum whilst making time to self Educate taking on child psychology, computer technology, management, marketing. As of 2012 qualified by Moscow State University as teacher of Russian language for kids.

Irina is the proud Mother of two adorable children and speaks Russian English and Greek.

Note from Irina

While In the process of raising two bilingual kids came the realization of the importance to support native language (Russian) while  living abroad.  It has become a goal of mine to create a Russian speaking community in Larnaca through LPN taking an active part in cultural events, providing interesting, educational, enriching and affordable entertainment and lots of activities for kids of different age.

Personal Vision

Everyone deserves to benefit from living in a multicultural environment. Especially our children. They can enjoy a beautiful blend of rich Russian and Cypriot cultures and traditions. Both Greek and Russian languages can (and should) be native to them, thus opening a world of culture, knowledge, opportunities, and, of course, moral values like respect & kindness.

LPN is delighted to Welcome Irina to the Team !

Home-made Mincemeat

Today's the 25th, that's 2 months to go for my favourite holiday! Christmas is nearly here!! It's time to start preparing and the first thing on my list is home-made mince-meat. Just so unbelievable simple to make and even if you buy the best quality available on the market, believe me, there is no comparison!! Just the thought of your home filling up with those lovely aromas of orange, cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice, makes it all worthwhile! I've been using this recipe for years now, making triple this quantity, to make my own mince-pies and leaving enough to spoon into pretty jars to give as lovely home-made Christmas gifts and also plenty left over to use through-out the year, adding to apple pies and crumples for that extra wow-factor!! It really is worth the while; give it a try this year!

Ingredients

450g Cooking apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped
225g shredded suet
350g raisins
225g sultanas
225g currants
225g mixed peel, finely chopped
350g dark brown sugar
Grated rind and juice of 2 oranges
Grated rind and juice of 2 lemons
100g almonds, cut into slivers
4 tsp mixed spice
½ tsp cinnamon
1 tsp nutmeg
6 tbsp brandy

Method

Just mix all the ingredients, except for the brandy. Cover with a cloth and leave for 12 hours. To prevent fermentation place mincemeat in a cool oven, (120c,gas mark ¼ ) for 3 hours. Allow to cool completely and stir in the brandy. Spoon into clean dry jars and seal.

Enjoy

LPN Mum Paula Manoli-Gray takes on The Cyprus Weekly

Although not originally from the town, I have lived in Larnaca since I was 11 years old, with a brief stint away when I studied and worked in England for four years, subsequently meeting the love of my life then dragging him over here too. I have to confess that I love, love, love Larnaca and I am not afraid to shout it from the tops of the Kamares; we are truly a gem on this island, although sometimes other towns fail to see our immense value – something which is a real bugbear with me.

The town and I have had a good thing going at every stage of my life! In my teens and twenties, I enjoyed the nightlife (it was the golden era of Dhekelia Road in my day!), and long lazy summers glued to our great beaches. Now that I am a mother of two in my thirties, I have found no end of fun things to do with the kids, from English language toddler groups and drama classes, to compact play-places. As I get older, no doubt the town will be able to accommodate my more ‘mature’ years too, which is why tourists of all ages, shapes and sizes also favour Larnaca.

So, through these pages, I hope to inform, promote and bring together the community of this unique town, because Larnaca has a whole lot of heart and a very deep sense of community that ensures that despite these difficult times, we will prevail. I see kindness and support on a daily basis as the folk of this town rally around to assist those in need even whilst dealing with their own struggles.

Naturally, there are also faults, mistakes and darn-right frustrating elements to Larnaca and at times I wonder how the town is still standing upright, but there also seems to be a lot of progress and attempts to move forward and I believe this is what we should focus on, whilst giving voice to our dissatisfaction through the right channels to effect change.

Naturally, these pages wouldn’t be possible without the people of Larnaca, so if you have any news or events you would like included – or story ideas on local people, the town’s history or any worthy causes - please send the details to me for consideration to: paulamanoli@hotmail.com and I will endeavour to accommodate what I can.

Whether you spell the town ‘Larnaka’ or ‘Larnaca’ (the former is the official spelling, the latter is the commonly used version), as long as you call the region your home and want to be kept updated, stick to these pages each week for all your community news!

Beef and Lentil Soup

Just love this coolerweather now in Cyprus, still nice to go to the beach but in the evenings I'm
feeling a little chilly, craving something warm and comforting. How about a hearty, delicious soup full of goodness?! I found this recipe which is a meal in itself, served with lovely fresh bread, just perfect! Hope you like it!!

Ingredients

2 tbls Olive Oil
750g boneless stewing beef, cut into cubes
Salt & pepper
3 celery stalks,chopped
2 carrots, chopped
1 large onion,chopped
6 garlic cloves, chopped
1 ½ tsp chopped rosemary leaves
1 ½ dried oregano
1 can of tomatoes
2 cups of lentils,rinsed
1.3 cup fresh parsley

Method
Heat the oil in a large heavy pot over a medium heat. Sprinkle the beef with salt & pepper.
Add to the pot and brown on all sides until brown, about 8 minutes should do it. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the beef to a bowl and set aside. Add the celery, carrots, onion, garlic, rosemary and oregano to the pot. Sauté until the onions are transparent.
Return the beef to the pot and any accumulated juices from the pot. Add the tomatoes and cover with water. Bring to the boil. Now reduce heat to medium, cover and simmer until meat is just tender, stirring occasionally and if needed add a little water. Add the lentils and continue to cook until tender, add water if necessary but make sure you're left with  a lovely thick sauce. Season with salt and
pepper. Sprinkle with the fresh parsley.

LPN Interviews the Young Writer and Author of ''The Lands Beyond'', Marie Lange

It's with great pleasure that we share this most recent exclusive interview on Larnaca Parents Network with the young, talented and passionate Marie Lange.

Marie Lange is a young writer and author of the youth fiction book ''The Lands Beyond''. The most impressive fact is that she was only 15 when she wrote it and already has her book published on Amazon!

This interview was conducted on September 20th for LPN, when the young writer was invited to our offices with her mother. In this interview, Marie talks about her first book, her passion for writing and introduces us to her world.

Q: First of all, nice having you here with us. When did you come to Cyprus and why ?

A: I was born in Germany to German and American parents. I came to Cyprus in January 2009 because my father is a missionary and this is the reason we moved to Larnaca. We plan to stay open-ended, and we like it here.

Q: Why did you decide to write a book?

A: I like writing, I like creating stories!. When I started writing I had this picture in my head of a whole new world that I wanted to get down on paper. It was really fun creating it!

Q:We had a look at your book and we feel that your story seems to be a combination of science fiction and a fairy tale. What inspired you to write your first book?

A: Thank you... I have always liked reading. I've been reading since I was four and I have been writing stories for about two years now, mostly writing fan fiction stories. My mother told me about NaNoWriMo, which is National Novel Writing Month... It's a program in the US where you write a novel in 30 days.

Q: Is NaNoWriMo a competition for young writers?

A: Not quite, you don't win as such, you just do it! You complete it and then you feel really glad because you finished a book! You write 50,000 words in 30 days and I thought I should give it a try and... I got a book out of it!

Q: What is the story of your book?

A: It's about a girl called Zephyr. She is 15 and she lives in Chicago. She can control the air and the wind etc, and she can fly too, something that I always found fascinating! She goes to this other world, a world of new friends, new powers but also new dangers. She starts training her powers at the school and then the government of the country collapses and these powers start trying to take over the world. Now she has to control her powers and adjust to her new life... So, read the book and find out the rest! [laughing]

Q: Are characters based on someone you know or fictional?

A: The main character is based a lot on me but I think she is much nicer than I am [she laughs] and the relationships between Zephyr and her friends are very similar as we are about the same age.

Q: Is there a message in your book that you desire readers to grasp? Is this a happy ending story?

A: Yes, there is ... I don't like sad endings, there are depressing... It's about working together and overcoming differences! These are four types of ''elementals'' that are different and have a long history of not getting on well, but these four teenagers have to work together and overcome their differences! So, it's primarily about working together... People are people and it doesn't matter what society thinks you are. People should accept you for that.

Q: Are you going to write a sequel?

A: Yes, I have started to plan it and I am going to start writing it next year. However, this time I am going to have a plot already worked out, something that didn't happen with my first book.

Marie while working on her book
Q:What was the process of publishing your book on Amazon?

A: It took me a month to write it. I wrote it by hand and then typed it into the computer every few days. Then, the editing took another five months. I think I had about three or four drafts, where I had to check the spelling and if the story flowed correctly, and if I had anyone acting out of character and so on. I set the book up at Createspace, which is a company associated with Amazon. A friend of mine helped me because he had already published a book and had a good understanding of how things worked. I was a little confused and he helped me with the formatting. It didn't cost anything except shipping the proofs, because I had a coupon for five free copies from NaNoWriMo for "winning." There were things that I could have done to distribute it further but I would have had to pay money, however as it was already on Amazon, I didn't pay a single cent, so that was good.

Q: Were your family and friends supportive while you were writing your book?

A: Yes, my family supported me emotionally and gave me the space I needed! However, they were asking me for the end of the story but I wasn't telling them! Also, I have a friend, Charis, who wrote a novel as well, so the two of us talked a lot about our novels, how to get our characters to do what we want them to do, how hard it is etc. It was fun having someone to talk to!

As Marie came along with her mother, we had the chance to have a discussion with her as well and find out more about her daughter.

Q: Do you consider your daughter to be different from other children of her age?

A: Doesn't everyone thinks that his or her daughter is unique? It's exciting and interesting, and at the same time I'm surprised that she thinks she has only been writing for two years now, because I would say she has been writing for 12 years!

Q: Do you remember your daughter's first story?

A: Her first written story was when she was about five years old and was about Peter and Jane going to the circus!

Q: Back to you Marie...Do you have any favorite TV cartoon characters?

A: Not really, no! I read books! I do not watch TV. At home we have about 3000 books so ... I read... Not all of them of course... yet! [laughing]

Q: Do you consider yourself different than other children?

A: Not really, I believe everyone is different... as my book suggests. Everyone is different but they are still people! I think being home educated I have had the freedom to invest in my hobbies, to have time to write and read books. I like reading a lot more than most other people my age I guess. But there are people who are doing many more things than I do, so I don't believe I am much different from others... I just prioritize writing.

Q: Do you have any other hobbies except for writing?

A: I  play violin. I started when I was nine and I have played in orchestras in Nicosia and Limassol. I am considering studying music but I'm not too sure about it yet.

Q: What dream do you have about your future?

A: I have no idea yet! I think it would be ideal if I could be a concert violinist but I know that is really hard. I also want to keep writing. I am not planning to get rich, I just want to write my books.

Q: What is the ideal world for you?

A: Ideal world? Heaven! Everyone working together!

Marie receives the 1st shipment of her book

We wish the best of luck to Marie, to keep on writing and achieving her goals. We will keep an eye on this young girl because we believe she has a bright future.

You can find her book on Amazon US, Amazon Germany and Amazon UK and we highly recommend this to our audience!

This interview was conducted for LPN by Christos Aspros and was supported by Sharon Mckinley.

Falling down the rabbit hole

Falling down the rabbit hole

Entertaining and inspiring children through theatre

Catherine Beger – the founder of ‘Little Muse Young People’s Theatre’ - will be premiering the company’s latest production of ‘Alice’s Wonderland’ on November 9 at Theatre Scala. This unique adventure is part of Catherine’s larger repertoire of weekly children’s drama classes and entertainment, and the one-woman theatre company has gained a reputation for being the home of children’s English-language theatre in Larnaca.

Featuring a cast of two; Catherine and Lefteris Moschovias - who also wrote the score for the production - the play is being directed by Torkild Lindebjerg, with design by Liene Kalpisa and translation into Greek by Eri Constantinou.

As Catherine explains, the play is loosely based on Lewis Carroll’s book ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ with its own twist: “The original story follows a child’s journey towards maturity which makes it the perfect vehicle to explore the theme of personal growth. In our version, Mr Apollonius is a travelling showman, eager for his daughter Alice to follow in his footsteps and take centre stage. She is shy and cannot, but tumbling into Wonderland, Alice meets a host of strange characters and begins a journey of discovery to find her own voice.”

Catherine originally met Torkild when she travelled to Scandinavia in 2003 to attend a children’s festival in Denmark as part of ‘Antidote Theatre’. Inviting him to become a guest director for the company, he went on to direct ‘The Little Man’s Best Friend’, which enjoyed 260 performances - many of which were abroad. He returned in 2007 to direct Antidote’s ‘Aesop’s Fables’.

When Catherine thought of Alice, she naturally thought of Torkild and invited him back to Cyprus to be part of the adventure: “He is not just a fantastic director, but a dear friend. He had helped to establish the identity of Antidote in the most difficult circumstances and now he was more than willing to do the same for Little Muse Theatre.”

But the vision was not without its road bumps; scheduled for a time when the economic crisis has affected funding for the arts, Catherine was forced to think of other ways to make her vision a reality and appealed to the community of Larnaca to help. The response was overwhelming and to date she has received donations of €3500 from local businesses and individuals: “I couldn’t believe so many people were prepared to come on this journey with me. Their help in any shape or form - be it financial, emotional, childcare for my daughter, providing a venue, materials for set and construction, has made this show possible and I thank them all from the bottom of my heart.”

Little Muse itself is in still in its infancy, but is a natural progression of Catherine’s original organisation, Antidote Theatre, which she had set up in 1999 with Xenakis Kyriakides. At the time there was a distinct lack of opportunities, for children’s theatre, but undeterred, the duo started their first classes. Over the years, the success of the company grew and it was officially umbrellered by the Ministry of Education in 2004, taking theatre to schools around the island. Earlier this year, the two went their separate ways as Catherine wanted to focus on English-language theatre for children, and Little Muse was born.

Little Muse runs throughout the week for different age groups, as well as a Saturday morning event every second and fourth Saturday of the month, which includes a short play, a snack, crafts and song time.

Donations are still being accepted for Alice’s Wonderland, which will show on November 9, 16, and December 7 at Theatre Scala, 4pm in English. The show will be performed in Greek in January. Tickets cost €7 for adults, and €5 for children.

Chicken Korma

Apparently this week is 'Curry Week', good excuse to choose a recipe from this popular and much-loved cuisine. Curries always remind me of my Uncle Andy, a great lover of curries, who introduced me to my first curry dish. Growing up, I never liked this spicy dish and whenever my Mum cooked a curry, I preferred to have something else, until I visited my family in Cheltenham. My Uncle, who sadly died a few years ago, being a stubborn man, decided this won't do and off we went to have a family meal in a lovely little Indian restaurant. He ordered a few dishes, which he put in front of me, I tried them, but no, it just didn't work. Uncle Andy was not about to give up, so he called the waiter, ordered another dish, which was brought before me. I took a bite and that was it, I was hooked, that dish was Chicken Korma. Growing older, I have become more adventurous with my curry dishes but this one remains my favourite, because, like I said many times, food is not always just about stirring our taste buds but also about the memories and people attached to that particular food experience!!

Ingredients
2 tbl soil
1 large onion, chopped
4 cloves
4 cardamon pods, crushed
4 chickenbreasts cut into bit-sized pieces
3 garlic cloves, crushed
4 cm fresh ginger, peeled and grated
1 tsp ground coriander, 1/4 tsp allspice, 1 ½ tsp cumin,1/2 tsp turmeric,1 tsp mild
chilli pepper
2 tsp tomato puree
75g ground almonds
250ml chicken stock
200ml cream
Salt & pepper
50g flaked almonds

Method
Heat oil in a large saucepan and fry the onion, cloves and cardamom pods for a few minutes until the onion begins to soften.
Add the chicken, garlic and ginger and, after frying for 4 minutes, add all the remaining spices. Stir around in the pan, allowing them to release their flavour into the chicken.
Add the tomato puree, ground almonds, stock and cream and bring to a simmer. Cook for about 15 minutes until reduced to the consistency of thick cream. Taste and add seasoning.
Scatter over the toasted almonds and serve rice and naan bread.
